Horatio Gates Spafford knew tragedy and loss. His four precious daughters perished in a shipwreck; only his wife survived. Drawing strength from his faith he wrote the lyrics for the hymn “It is Well with My Soul” that is often heard in times of mourning and thanksgiving.
When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well with my soul.

The Spafford Children’s Center in Jerusalem was started by Horatio’s daughter in 1925 and continues today as a beacon for children and families of the Holy Land who confront daily tragedy and loss in lives marked by uncertainty.
